Three Chords and the Truth is Van Morrison’s 41st album, and after a prolific run of albums featuring many cover versions this is a return to original compositions. wonder if Van wrote it in answer to journalist’s questions as Dylan did? there, or this review will turn into a political rant! A true disappointment to this long-time fan. Van Morrison Three Chords And The Truth (Exit/Caroline International) Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Morrison is in excellent voice throughout; his energy is kinetic and his songwriting -- even when he's complaining -- is fresh, humorous, soulful, and insightful. after a career of nearly 60 years to be able to produce work of this standard Morrison, who also produced the album, brings "Astral Weeks" guitarist Jay Berliner back into the fold on six tracks to add some very fine acoustic guitar leads. This record is pure joy and a most welcome return to form. "In Search of Grace" recounts a woman's mysterious disappearance 50-odd years ago to a tune reminiscent of the Impressions' "People Get Ready," while closer "Days Gone By" is nearly eight minutes of earthbound mysticism built on folk foundations similar to those that elevated many of Morrison's best albums in decades past. Each latter day album has that killer track (i.e Hey Mr. DJ, Little Village, Magic Time, Keep It Simple, Open The Door To Your Heart, Keep Me Singing, Transformation, Got to Go Where the Love Is). me it is the best one since Keep Me Singing. A very hands on record, in addition to the sterling band and his own terrific vocals Van's all over the musical landscape -- on acoustic and electric guitars, electric piano, and sax. Now some Van fans have seemed to have been a bit letdown at recent records (and theres been a lot of recent records) and Ive enjoyed all of them so when you read initially reviews of this album raving about this one you think ah so what! Dating back to those halcyon days of the ’70s, Van Morrison has made something of a habit of releasing memorable records in the fall. Sorry for my honesty but this album lacks the inspirational quality of much of his best work--at this point in his life with money and nothing to prove he should be challenging himself creatively not resting on his laurels. Given Three Chords and the Truth's 70-minute run time, there's a lot to digest, but it's worth it. The unfortunate character in the R&B workout of "You Don't Understand" is either suffering from a persecution complex or has really had it rough, a sentiment that also drifts over to "Read Between the Lines.". On the soulful title track, as well as on the rollicking "Early Days" that features Morrison's honking sax, he revisits career beginnings, a theme he's tackled before, which evidently continues to inspire him. My  job before I gave up on work was working in a book warehouse. He has given us many stellar albums over the decades though his recent albums are a bit "spotty" quality/inspiration wise. Van Morrison has been on a prolific roll over the last couple of years, releasing a new album every 6 months or so. However, most of these have been covers albums, with just one or two new Van songs thrown into the mix. Something is happening here, and you don’t understand, do you Mr Jones? Probably will put a couple of these cuts on a compilation and sell this CD to recoup a few bucks. I have been a Van enthusiast since he fronted the band Them. But agree Up on Broadway is the best. And if you didnt know it age is just a number. For me it is one of the lesser songs here. Instead, Van the Man's sixth(!) No covers all originals, there are many great songs on here. They have also been in genres which the great man sometimes explores, like Jazz, and R'n'B, fine, but a more specialist niche, not for everybody, and outside of his mainstream work for which he is renowned.
