My 2 cents. Elk are tough animals. Like i said this is all info i have got from tv and not first had experience so nothing i have said is a fact just my thoughts. The shot placement was quartering away and too far forward missing the lungs. I'd beat my head against the wall. After bumping this bull 4 times, each time he pushed the blood clot out, and a long day of tracking we found him too weak to run away any more. My hunting partner has a 350 dead somewhere for the coyotes from last season and a broken Rage. I'm not going to knock another company's head but if you decide to go with a fixed blade give the VPA Terminator a try. I only know what I've seen n the wild on hunts. I double lunged both cows without a complete pass through. The fact they cut a large hole will reduce penetration. Not looking to argue--just looking for specifics. That is why I shoot a fixed well flying head. They have come out with a 2-blade 1.5" cut that will probably help that problem. That should tell you a bit about rage heads, my results have found them to be expensive junk. I will be using mech's again this year. Just my opinion of course. I used the rage heads last year practiced a lot with the practice heads. They are the toughest broadhead on the market. I am planning on purchasing a pack just to see how they work but I don't expect to be switching from my cut on contact any day soon. I have personally had two complete pass throughs on elk using two bladed rages. A elk can go along ways in rough country with one lung. But that's the cool part about bowhunting. Don't listen to these Rage bashers. I'll be using rage on elk this fall. Like said above the bone structure on elk is much tougher on a elk and you want as much penetration as possible. Maybe not in others. Ive got the popcorn and beer! No chance that cat could have been a paid endorser of Rage could it? I was not prepared for his answer. ... for the broadhead, the outfitter fee, travel expenses, and time off of work ! I've taken all kinds of animals with them and have yet to see them not deliver. I am a Rage fan, but not on elk. Now for myself, I know I only shoot 57lbs, and I know my ability, which has to be under 35 yards. I have taken several elk and the last 2 that were shot with Rage BH. An elk is more than a big deer, the bone structure is much heavier. I also don't care to accept the possiblities that come along with any mechanical. Hunting isn't perfect so you take an Elk who has been noshing for a day or two and living at the salad bar and try get a Rage thru to the lung area on a severe quartering away shot and you will have problems. I would never use them in the mountains and have to deal with the paranoia of blades opening up. Sitting down now to enjoy the show! I have had good luck wih the Snypers on Elk. Never found him, one lunged and fell out. That alone says something about the known possiblities for failure to me. I personally have never used rage (mechanicals are not legal on big game here) but from what i have seen on tv is that alot of the people that use rage heads do not always (some times they do)get great penetration on deer. Sure it's only 3 test shots, but a one out of even 20 kill ratio isn't good enough to risk my one shot per year opportunity on (as well as risking a wounded animal on a perfectly placed shot where I did my part). The Primos boys seem to put them down pretty good using the Rage. The only thing we don’t really like about these Rages is the shock collars they use for blade retention. I don't use mechs for elk, but I just saw a video study done by shwacker testing all of the popular mechs shot into a piece of plywood at a very steep quartering away angle. but that was with a fair bit more KE than you will see out of your bow. They have come undone from walking with a nocked arrow or simply pulling them from the quiver. I have heard that the 2" 2 blade worked well, but pass-throughs arent as common due to penetration problems. It'sot a matter of if the Rage will fail in some way, it's a matter of when... does this topic come up once a week or more? Mechanicals are one more thing that can go wrong, and I've had so many things go wrong at the wrong time, that I kind of want to stack the odds in my favor as much as I can. broadheads with moving parts always have a chance of failing. They have. I would recommend useing a fix blade broadhead.I just don't like mechanical on that large of game.That is my own personal option. From: hunterj. Either a) word search "Rage" and "elk" with the search function or b) go beat your head against a wall 3-4 times. Guys I'm a decent bowhunter heres my two cents on the broaheads, I think the guys that have bad results are the ones that dont check to make sure the broadhead is correct. The only item that really matters, Mechanical Broadhead Recommendations (Sevr, Deadmeat, etc. If i shoot a spine, one lung, scapula, etc.
